Vulture - WILLEM VAN DEN BERG - woodcut

WILLEM VAN DEN BERG
Dutch, (1886-1970)

Woodcut, possibly 1923, edition unknown. 17 x 14 in. Signed in pencil, lower left. Inscribed in the block, lower right, VAEVO. (de Vereeniiging tot Bevordering van het Aesthetisch Element in het Voortgezet Onderwijs, voor schoolversiering.) In other words, The Society for Promotion of the Aesthetic Element in Secondary Education. A number of talented artists from the period were involved with this project in bringing fine art to schools. This is a fine impression with full margins. The paper is a very thin Japanese. Two old hinges appear in the upper and left left corners and there's a soft crease in the upper right corner, just showing inside the mat opening. Two of his favorite subjects were birds and animals and paintings of this subject are known to exist. In 1938 he settled in Amsterdam and taught at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten.      $1,200
