Egret  -  VERSTIJNEN

Egret
Woodcut, circa 1929, Hansen / Drents Museum/Museum Mesdag catalogue page 47; edition unknown. 14 1/8 x 9 1/2 in. Signed and titled in pencil; also inscribed 'houtsnede handdruk." This is a fine, delicate impression printed on very thin Japanese paper. The margins are wide and the condition is very good. (There's a tiny hole in the right margin and some subtle wrinkling in the image most likely a result of the printing process. Verstijnen had a flair for the exotic and this is a favorite subject of his.

Flamingos -  VERSTIJNEN

Flamingos
Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1931, edition unknown. 19 3/8 x 13 5/8 in. Initialed in the block and signed and titled in pencil. A superb impression of this rare print. The margins are wide and the condition is fine. (There's a small repair to the upper right margin corner.) Verstijnen started out as a glass and ceramic designer in Gouda and then Maastricht. He later established himself in the Hague (1918) at the Pulchri Studio and with "Haagse Kunstkring" and specialized in printmaking and paintings of floral and animal subjects. An important retrospective exhibition was held in 2006-07 at the Drents Museum and also at the Museum Mestag, both in Holland. His large woodcuts are exceptional and also quite rare. Flamingos was printed from four blocks and is so inscribed.

Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1930, edition unknown. 10 x 7 1/2 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a fine impression printed on tan wove paper. The margins are wide and probably full. The condition is excellent. Verstijnen produced a series of floral woodcuts around 1930 which are exquisite in design and color. This interest in somewhat exotic subjects can especially be seen in his bird and animal studies for which he is best known. A retrospective of his work was held in 2006 in Assen and also in The Hague. A lavish catalogue was published in conjunction with the event.

Color woodcut, circa 1920-30, edition unknown but probably quite small. 19 3/4 x 14 1/8 in. Signed and titled in pencil. A fine, subtle impression of this stunning work. Verstijnen specialized in bird prints and his woodcuts are rare. Very good condition apart from tape remains on the margins corners, verso.
