Waterverversching (Water Refreshment) Etching, undated (probably circa 1920-25), Hijner/ Hilversum catalogue 37, edition unknown. 14 1/2 x 18 1/16 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. Titled in pencil, upper left. Inscribed, eigendruk," lower left (printed by hand). This is a fine impression in good condition. The margins are full. (There are a few spots of foxing(?) here and there in the margins.) Schonk did a series of fish etchings (and woodcuts) in black and white which echo the earlier work of J.G. Veldheer and his color woodcuts. Schonk's stylized work from the art deco era is quite distinctive and certainly worthy of more attention. He was a student of Simon Moulijn in Groningen. SOLD |
