Pelicans
Woodcut printed in colors, circa 1927-30, small edition. 13 3/8 x 15 3/8 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a superb impression with vibrant colors. The paper is a fibrous off-white Japanese with full margins. The condition is fine apart from a very faint bit of discoloration within a previous mat opening. This large and impressive work is quintessential Botke: great composition, bold colors and birds as subject. This is art as design and Botke at her best as a printmaker. She studied in Chicago but settled in California where she flourished as a decorative artist, painter and printmaker. Her woodcuts are not common and this is an especially fine example of her work.
