Etching, 1906, Zigrosser 13 (i/II); total edition about 30. 5 15/16 x 7 1/2 in. Signed and dated in the plate. Signed in pencil, lower right. This is a superb selectively-inked impression of the very rare first state. The margins are full and the condition is fine. (The side margins are 1/2" and the top and bottom measure 1" and 1 1/2" respectively. There's a deckle edge on all sides.) This outstanding early print shows the profound influence Whistler had on Marin's early work. Like Whistler and his Amsterdam etchings, Marin appreciated the uniqueness of every impression and applied the ink in such a dramatic way that no two impressions are quite the same. This becomes even more evident upon viewing other impressions from this plate found in museum collections including Colby College, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. This dynamic early work by Marin is extremely rare and is also a stellar expression of his march towards modernism.      SOLD
