(Houses) Provincetown - WILLIAM ZORACH

Medium: linoleum cut

WILLIAM ZORACH
American, (1887-1966)

Linoleum cut, 1921, Burk page 369; from an intended of 100 but this was most likely never completed. 5 3/8 x 7 in. Signed in pencil lower right. This is a superb impression of this outstanding early American modernist print. The margins are full and the condition is excellent. Burk states, "Houses, Provincetown", appears very much indebted to the craft of stage design; the flattened cityscape in the background looks very much like sets and the figures to the right appear to be thespians. The strong contrasts between lights and darks in the composition evoke the possible effect of stage lighting." (See Print Quarterly Volume XIX, Number 4, December 2002, pages 368-369.       $3,500
