HORST JANSSEN
German, (1929-1995)
Etching and aquatint, 1887, Griffelkunst 87, edition unknown. 11 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. Initialed and dated in the plate, lower right. Initialed in pencil. Here we have a fine impression with full margins. The condition is excellent. Janssen excelled at self portraiture and he produced innumerable version of his own likeness. This is the case here as the artist leans down to offer his cat, Lydia, a mouse. Janssen is widely considered one of the finest draughtsmen and printmakers of his generation. His work is found in a vast number of museums in Europe as well as here in the United States. This includes the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He's had exhibitions at the Rembrandthuis Museum and the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
