La Promenade, or, Les Cyprès (The Cypresses) - HENRI-EDMOND CROSS - lithograph printed in colors

HENRI-EDMOND CROSS
French, (1856-1910)

Lithograph printed in colors, 1897, Johnson 27, edition 100. 11 1/16 x 16 in. Signed and numbered in pencil, lower right, below the image. This is a superb impression printed on chine appliqué. The margins are full and the condition is fine apart from minor soft rippling across the top edge of the sheet. This scarce print was published by Vollard for L'Album d'Estampes Originales de la Galerie Vollard. In 1886, Cross co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendants that was associated with the Neo-Impressionism movement and he became close friends with many artists including Georges Seurat, Henri Matisse and Paul Signac. He eventually left Paris and moved to the south of France near St. Tropez and focused on seascapes and scenes of peasants in harmony with nature. Impressions of this outstanding print are found in the Van Gogh Museum, the National Gallery of Art and the McNay Art Museum.      $6,000
