Composition I - JACOBA VAN HEEMSKERCK
Medium: lithograph
JACOBA VAN HEEMSKERCK
Dutch, (1876-1923)
Lithograph, 1919, Haussen/van Paaschen-Louwerse 339; ten impressions cited. 10 5/8 x 6 1/2 in. Signed and numbered "7" in pencil. Here we have a fine impression with full margins. The condition is excellent. This rare print is the only abstract lithograph she made after doing a few early realistic portraits around 1906-1907. This avant garde work was certainly out of the mainstream of Dutch aesthetics at the time and she was influenced by Mondrian and the writings of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). She exhibited regularly in Germany through her connections with Herwarth Walden and Galerie der Sturm (Berlin) and her work was greatly admired there and acquired by collectors. Van Heemskerck also excelled in woodcuts and stained glass and received many commissions for this work. Impressions of this print are located in the Groninger Museum and the Stedelijk Museum.
