Bruges at Dawn (Quai St Ann) - YOSHIJIRO URUSHIBARA - woodcut printed in colors

YOSHIJIRO URUSHIBARA
Japanese, (1880-1953)

Woodcut printed in colors, 1919, Chapman/Horner UB 13, edition 50 plus proofs. 14 7/8 x 19 1/2 in. Signed lower left with the artist's seal. Signed in pencil by Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) and Urushibara. This is a fine impression with full margins. The condition is excellent with a deckle edge showing on all sides. This rare print is from the Bruges Portfolio which was the high point of the collaborative efforts between these two artists. Primarily, Brangwyn produced watercolors and/or drawings for a print and Urushibara cut and printed the blocks. The influence of Urushibara on many of his British contempories cannot be underestimated. He moved to London in 1910 and later took a position at the British Museum. He lived in London for about thirty years and he got to know Frank Morley Fletcher, John Platt and Allen Seaby among others. This print is illustrated on page 51 of The New Wave, Twentieth-century Japanese prints from the Robert O. Muller collection (1993) by Julia Meech, Et al.      $2,500
