Castle on a Mountain - JACOBUS G. VELDHEER
Medium: woodcut
JACOBUS G. VELDHEER
Dutch, (1866-1954)
Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown. 15 5/8 x 19 5/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. Inscribed in pencil, "voor S. Moulijn." This is a very fine impression on a white wove paper. The margins are full and the condition is fine. (There's a subtle soft wrinkle in the lower right margin outside of the image.) Veldheer specialized in printmaking. He produced book designs, portraits, landscapes and some of his woodcuts were printed in colors. His work is illustrated and discussed in Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau (2014) by Cliff Ackley; see pages 208-209. He was influenced by Japanese printmaking and this topic is discussed in Japanese Invloed op Nederlandandse kunst, Imitatie et Inspiratie van 1650 tot heden (1991) published by the Rijksmuseum (Ch. van Rappard-Boon, et al.); pages 133-134. The dedication is to fellow Dutch artist, Simon Moulijn (1866-1948), a well-known lithographer.
