Medium: drypoint and sand ground

Ha'nted - MARTIN LEWIS - drypoint and sand ground

American, (1881-1962)

Drypoint and sand ground, 1932, McCarron 100, edition 107. 13 1/8 x 8 15/16 in. Signed in the plate, lower left. Signed in pencil. This is a fine, luminous impression in excellent condition. The margins are full. This underrated, nighttime scene contains all the elements of a great Lewis print; crossed shadow lines, solitary figures, well-integrated architectural design, subtle stars highlighting an otherwise pitch black sky and there's an added element of psychological mystery to engage our imagination. Dedicated in pencil, "for John O'Gara," who was a Macy's VP at the time and a friend of the artist.      SOLD
