Baissez le Rideau, La Farce est Jouée (Bring Down the Curtain, The Farce is Over) - HONORE DAUMIER - lithograph

HONORE DAUMIER
French, (1808-1879)

Lithograph, 1834, Delteil 86, edition unknown. 7 15/16 x 11 in. Unsigned. This is a fine, rich impression as published in La Caricature, No. 201, September 11, 1834. The paper is a white wove and the condition is fine apart from remains of old paper hinges at the top corner. This is the full sheet. This memorable early work shows King Louis-Philippe dressed up as a clown while the curtain comes down. He points to the statue depicting blind justice and the scene has the look of ancient Roman theater. The title of the print is derived from the famous last words of François Rabelais, "I am going to seek a great perhaps; draw a curtain, the farce is played out." From the collection of "MKL," not in Lugt.      SOLD
