This is a fine impression of this charming print. The margins are full and the condition is fine. Schmutzer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and spent two years in Holland on a scholarship. He loved the Dutch painters of the 17th century and especially Rembrandt's etchings. He was also a talented photographer and became well know in this medium. In 1901, he became a member of the Vienna Secession. $550 |

Signed in the plate and signed in pencil. Furthermore, this superb impression is inscribed "essai" (trial proof.) The condition is fine. The margins are wide if not full. Crauzat lists 19 proofs plus three trials, as we have here, in the third state.

Van Gelder was a masterful draughtsman in the tradition of Seghers, Rembrandt, and Bresdin. In fact, he is the author of the catalogue raisonne of Bresdin's etchings which was published in 1976. The artist always maintained close ties to The Hague: His father was the founder of the Gemeentemuseum and Director there from 1912-1941. Furthermore, the artist taught at the city's Royal Academy of Art from 1952-1972 and he helped establish the Hague Etching Club in 1984. SOLD |
