Castle on a Mountain Woodcut, circa 1900-1910, edition unknown. 15 5/8 x 19 5/8 in. Signed in pencil, lower right. Inscribed in pencil, "voor S. Moulijn." This is a very fine impression on a white wove paper. The margins are full and the condition is fine. (There's a subtle soft wrinkle in the lower right margin outside of the image.) Veldheer specialized in printmaking. He produced book designs, portraits, landscapes and some of his woodcuts were printed in colors. His work is illustrated and discussed in Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau (2014) by Cliff Ackley; see pages 208-209. He was influenced by Japanese printmaking and this topic is discussed in Japanese Invloed op Nederlandandse kunst, Imitatie et Inspiratie van 1650 tot heden (1991) published by the Rijksmuseum (Ch. van Rappard-Boon, et al.); pages 133-134. The dedication is to fellow Dutch artist, Simon Moulijn (1866-1948), a well-known lithographer. $1,400 |

Old Dutch Towns on the Zuiderzee (Oude Hollandsche Steden aan de Zuiderzee) Woodcut, 1900, Braches 971109; one of a few proofs. 9 7/8 x 7 in. Initialed in the block, lower left. This is a superb impression with full margins. The condition is fine apart from a subtle stain in the lower right margin. This wonderful Dutch art nouveau woodcut is the cover design for the book of the same title. It was published in Haarlem by Erven F. Bohn, 1900. Veldheer was a masterful woodblock artist who spent considerable time in France and was influenced by Japanese prints as well as by Paris art dealer, Samuel Bing. SOLD |

Portrait of Theo van Hoytema Wood engraving (woodcut?), circa 1913, small edition. 6 3/8 x 6 3/8 in. Signed in pencil and also inscribed "proefdruk." This is a fine impression of an uncommon print. This is the full, untrimmed sheet with a deckle edge all around. The condition is fine other than minor paper imperfections, one in the blank area at left, and an old fold in the lower margin. This important portrait is illustrated on page 16 of Theo van Hoytema 1863-1917, the 1999 exhibition catalogue for the Drents Museum/Gemeentemuseum show about the artist. An impression of this work is located in the Rijksmuseum collection. $900 |
