We are please to represent the woodcut prints of Andrea Rich, an American artist born in 1954. Her work is inspired by traditional Japanese woodblocks. It differs in that she uses both multiple blocks and the reduction method in which a single block is carved, printed and re-carved multiple times. Instead of watercolor her blocks are printed with oil based inks. Her work is highly sophisticated with vibrant colors and beautiful designs. The editions are small as the process, from beginning to end, is extremely labor intensive. She designs, carves and prints all her own work.Rich has prints in several museums including the Woodson Art Museum, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Santa Cruz Museum of Modern Art. All of her prints are based on personal observations of wildlife as viewed in their natural habitats. She has visited Australia, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Madagascar, and Europe and has done many prints inspired by her home state of California.
ARTIST'S STATEMENTS - ANDREA RICH
"I first became interested in woodcut prints as a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1971 when I was introduced to Japanese Ukiyo-e prints. Their elegant compositions and intricate surface textures inspired me to explore the medium’s many possibilities for design. Woodcuts can be bold or subtle, crude or refined. The process of cutting the blocks has never ceased to delight me.""I create my prints using a combination of methods. To create a print I will use multiple blocks as well as the reduction process. A typical print will require 9 to 15 print runs to complete. Since the reduction process destroys the blocks the editions can never be reprinted. If you make a mistake, you can’t go back and change it. My editions are 30 or less. I print using oil based ink because I prefer the stronger color and lightfastness and I print on oriental papers.""Printmaking works for me because it slows me down and makes me have to consciously decide what I am putting in as well as what I am leaving out. Each mark is a conscious action, there are no happy accidents. Like a sculptor, I cut away what is unnecessary and am left with an image, clear and strong like the animals I portray.""As to subject, life in all it's diverse forms holds great interest for me. I rarely include manmade objects, buildings or structures in my work. I like an organic line much more than a straight one."
