West Side (New York) Woodcut, 1940s, edition unknown but probably quite small. 9 1/2 x 22 1/4 in. Signed and titled in pencil. This is a fine impression on thin Japanese paper. The margins are substantial. The condition is very good apart from a small area of discoloration in the lower right corner, just to the image and a bit of toning in the upper left corner margin area. Kallem was a WPA artist. An account in Who Was Who in American Art states, "After Kallem won First Prize in the 1947 Pepsi Cola Exhibition for his painting 'Country Tenement,' Life Magazine ran an article, 'Freak Painting Prizes' (August, 1948) recounting the controversy over awards being given to what some critics considered unintelligible modern art."
