La Falaise-Baie de Saint-Malo - FELIX BUHOT
Medium: etching, drypoint, aquatint and roulette printed from two plates
Etching, drypoint, aquatint and roulette printed from two plates, 1886-1890, Bourcard-Goodfriend 165 (v/VI); edition unknown. 11 3/4 x 15 3/4 in. Signed with the large red owl stamp (Lugt 977) in the lower left. Signed in pencil. this is a superb, exceptional impression printed with two colors; one for the inner image and another for the symphonic borders. The margins are full. The condition is fine apart from a tiny pinhole repair and a tiny indentation in the border at right, not at all noticeable from the front. The central image (state v) was done from a watercolor by Buhot's father in law, Henry Johnston, which Buhot worked up from heliogravure. (The margins are state iii representing the second plate.) This is certainly one of Buhot's finest works and it's an iconic image in the history of 19th century French landscape etching. Provenance: SPB (Dr. Samuel Perkins Bailey, not in Lugt.) It's the finest impression we've seen in quite some time.
