Dogs (Les Chiens) - PIERRE BONNARD - lithograph

PIERRE BONNARD
French, (1867-1947)

Lithograph, 1893, Bouvet 25, edition 100. 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. Signed and numbered in pencil. This is a fine impression in excellent condition. The margins are full. There were an additional twenty impressions on Japanese paper. This stellar work was reproduced in "L'Escarmouche," No. 5, December 10, 1893. "Bonnard's picture of stray dogs disporting themselves is one of his most skillful creations of high caricature, and it brings to mind not only the dazzling energy of Daumier but also Manet's best work in black and white..." (See page 121 of Pierre Bonnard, The Graphic Art, by Colta Ives, et al. (1989). The influence of Japanese printmaking is certainly evident here with the flat composition.      SOLD
