Two White Egrets (Twee Zilverreigers) - THEO VAN HOYTEMA - lithograph with embossing

THEO VAN HOYTEMA
Dutch, (1863-1917)

Lithograph with embossing, 1898, Rijksmuseum/de Groot 89 (i/II); edition unknown. 17 1/2 x 13 1/4 in. Signed on the stone, lower right. This is a superb impression printed on chine appliqué. The margins are full and the condition is very good. (There's a repaired split in the top margin and one at the right margin, center, both well away from the image. There's a tiny scuff to the chine, lower left, just to the edge of the image.) This iconic Dutch image, along with "Five Angora Rabbits," are from Hoytema's best know series called "Animal Studies" ('Dierstudies'), published as a set of five works in 1898. Hoytema was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition and catalogue organized by the Gemeentemuseum/Drents Museum in the Hague in 1999. This important work is illustrated and discussed on pages 92-93 of Holland on Paper in the Age of Art Nouveau by Cliff Ackley (2014).       SOLD
