This is a superb selectively-inked impression of the very rare first state. The margins are full and the condition is fine. (The side margins are 1/2" and the top and bottom measure 1" and 1 1/2" respectively. There's a deckle edge on all sides.) This outstanding early print shows the profound influence Whistler had on Marin's early work. Like Whistler and his Amsterdam etchings, Marin appreciated the uniqueness of every impression and applied the ink in such a dramatic way that no two impressions are quite the same. This becomes even more evident upon viewing other impressions from this plate found in museum collections including Colby College, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. This dynamic early work by Marin is extremely rare and is also a stellar expression of his march towards modernism.

The paper is a cream Japanese and the margins are full. The condition is excellent. Like Whistler and his Amsterdam etchings, Marin appreciated the uniqueness of every impression and applied the ink in such a dramatic way that no two impressions are exactly the same. We sold a rare first state of this print a couple of years ago and the inking was substantially different than this one. Other impressions are found at Colby College, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Brooklyn Bridge No. 6 (Swaying)
Etching, 1913, Zigrosser 112, only state. 10 3/4 x 8 3/4 in. Signed and dated in the plate. Signed in pencil. A fine, tonal impression of this landmark work from the year of the Armory Show. Full margins showing a deckle all around. Fine condition. This impression, showing a Van Gelder Zonen watermark, is one of several impressions printed for the New Republic Portfolio. The original edition of about 12 was published by Alfred Stieglitz at 291 Fifth Avenue, New York. (This first edition was printed on Whatman paper.) By far, most impressions of the Marin print included in the Portfolio are from Zigrosser plate 134, "Downtown, The El."

In very good condition apart from the upper left corner margin missing. The margins appear to be untrimmed. This impression was included in the New Republic Portfolio.

Etching, 1921, Zigrosser 134, edition fewer than 500 as published in the New Republic portfolio. 6 7/8 x 8 3/4 in. Signed and dated in the plate. Signed in pencil, lower left. This is a fine impression printed with plate tone. The margins are full with a deckle edge showing on all sides. The condition is excellent. According to Zigrosser, the total edition of the New Republic portfolio was probably about 500 impressions, but the Marin prints were divided between this and one other, Brooklyn Bridge No.6 (Swaying), Zigrosser 112. Zigrosser originally thought Z106 (Brooklyn Bridge and Lower New York) was the other print but he subsequently corrected himself. In any event, this print, Z134, is much more common and certainly quite desirable.

Etching, 1907, Zigrosser 67, edition about 25. 7 3/4 x 5 3/8 in. Signed, dated and titled in the plate. Signed in pencil. This is a fine, delicate impression printed on a smooth wove paper. The margins are diagonally trimmed at the upper left corner and more so in lower left corner. The condition is otherwise fine. Marin etched several plates of Venice in 1907 reflecting the influence of Whistler and his very popular Venice sets.
